چکیده

optimistic replicltion is m imparrrnt technique for achieving high avdability in distributed file systans. A key problem m optimistic rephtim is using d c b w l e d g e of objects to resolve co"mt updates from multiple partitions. In this paper, we describe how the Coda File System resolves pllrtitionsd updareg to updates is a simple yet efficient and powerful teclmique for directory resolution m Unix file systems. Mersurementr from our implementatkm show that the time for resolution is typically less than 1096 of the time for paforming the original set of partitioned updates. Analysis based on file traces fnnn our envinm" indicate that a log size of 2 MB per hour of padtion should be ample for typical dirCCtOIkS. The C U U d I d t Of Our Work is th.t &g&g Of

An Experimental Evaluation of the Coda

Experimental evaluation is an important way to assess distributed systems, and fault injection is the dominant technique in this area for the evaluation of a system’s dependability. For distributed systems, network failure is an important fault model. Physical network failures often have far-reaching effects, giving rise to multiple correlated failures as seen by higher-level protocols. This th...

Flexible and Safe Resolution of File Conflicts

In this paper we describe the support provided by the Coda File System for transparent resolution of conflicts arising from concurrent updates to a file in different network partitions. Such partitions often occur in mobile computing environments. Coda provides a framework for invoking customized pieces of code called application-specificresolvers (ASRs) that encapsulate the knowledge needed fo...

A Peer-to-Peer Browsable File Index using a Popularity Based Global Namespace

The distribution of files using decentralized, peer-topeer (P2P) systems, has significant advantages over centralized approaches. It is however more difficult to settle on the best approach for file sharing. Most file sharing systems are based on query string searches, leading to a relatively simple but inefficient broadcast or to an efficient but relatively complicated index in a structured en...

Using Transparent Informed Prefetching (TIP) to Reduce File Read Latency

No current solution fully addresses read latency TIP to reduce latency • exploits high-level hints that don't violate modularity • converts throughput to latency Preliminary TIP test results As processor performance gains continue to outstrip Input/Output gains, I/O performance is becoming critical to overall system performance. File read latency is the most significant bottleneck for high perf...
